Laboratory Technician Job Description

Job Status: Full Time; Non-Exempt

Direct Supervisor: Lab Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for navigating day to day laboratory operations while assisting our molecular breeding team with all tasks associated with the management, characterization, and development of Cannabis germplasm. Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technician performs extraction, distillation, and shatter of cannabis products, as well as, operation and maintenance of analytical, purification and extraction instruments. Lab Technicians use various types of machinery, lab equipment, and computer programs to perform tests and data collection with the goal of optimizing lab procedures and producing consistent, safe, and quality products. Communication skills, organization, attention to safety, detail and time management are essential skills for this role. The ideal candidate must possess a strong work ethic, high attention to detail, and the ability to interact positively and effectively in a team environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Support the molecular breeding team with general molecular biology work: DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, etc.

  • Assist, as needed, with the evaluation of CAC’s germplasm through the collection of quantitative phenotypic data

  • Provide feedback to the management team to improve processes and core functions

  • Assist with the development and optimization of laboratory and cultivation experiments and pipelines

  • Effectively communicate activities, and findings to area leadership

  • Help create a proactive and positive environment; a positive attitude and self-motivation to help produce a high-quality product, while meeting and/or exceeding personal and/or company goals

Quality & Financial

  • Report to management any event or condition that might affect product growth development

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment

  • Complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner according to company SOPs

  • Perform tasks related to breeding: DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, etc., in a highly productive and efficient manner to maximize yield

  • Wash and sanitize all equipment. Scout all equipment, ensuring all tools are free of pests, viruses or disease

  • Complete regular quality assessments and records data in the master record

People & Development

  • Assist peers and new hires in learning about the business and equipment to enhance understanding

  • Maintain high level of morale and enthusiasm to assist the team

  • Continually increase knowledge of products, policies and procedures, and industry standards during downtime

Compliance

  • Comply with company and industry standards set forth by the state

  • Adhere to all safety policies and wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Two- or four-year degree in chemistry, biology, or related field preferred

  • Background in molecular biology, biology, plant sciences, or related field

  • Previous laboratory or manufacturing experience related to the job requirements are preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Able to stand for extended periods, and kneel, stoop, bend, twist, in tight areas

  • Able to lift 10 to 25 pounds

  • Repetitive use of hands for all functions

  • Willingness to work rotating shifts with varied hours/day, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events
